When is a cardiac assessment needed and what does it include?
01Does everyone need a cardiologist before surgery?+
Not necessarily.
The need for cardiac evaluation depends on the type of operation, age, history, symptoms and general condition of the patient.
02What does the pre-operative cardiac checkup include?+
It starts with the history and clinical examination.
Depending on the case, an electrocardiogram or other tests may be needed. There is no reason to perform all available cardiac tests on every patient.
03I take anticoagulants or antiplatelets. Should I stop them before surgery?+
Not without specific medical direction.
The decision depends on the drug, why you are taking it, the bleeding risk of the procedure and the risk of clotting if it is stopped.
Arbitrary interruption can be dangerous.
