The natriuretic peptides BNP and NT-proBNP are measured in the blood and can help investigate possible heart failure, such as when shortness of breath is present.
An elevated value is not enough for a diagnosis. Age, kidney function, atrial fibrillation and other factors affect results, while obesity may be associated with lower values.
The cardiologist combines the measurements with the clinical examination and, where necessary, the ultrasound. Their changes can provide information about the course, but they are not evaluated by themselves.
The information is general and is not a substitute for medical evaluation. Do not change your treatment without instructions. For urgent symptoms call 112 or 166.
