Understanding basic cardiology terms helps in the discussion with the doctor. The following six disease groups were featured on the cards of the original publication.
Coronary artery disease: damage to the arteries that supply the heart muscle, which can limit its blood supply.
Valvular diseases: narrowing or failure of the valves that affects blood flow.
Heart failure: the heart does not adequately meet the body's needs, with possible shortness of breath, fatigue or fluid retention.
Arrhythmias: disturbances in the frequency or regularity of the heart rhythm, with different meaning in each case.
Pericarditis and myocarditis: inflammation of the lining of the heart or the heart muscle itself, respectively.
Endocarditis: inflammation, usually infectious, of the lining and often of the valves, which requires prompt treatment.
