Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is primarily genetically determined. Elevated levels are associated with a greater risk of atherosclerosis and aortic valve stenosis, even when other lipid values appear normal.
Measurement is recommended at least once in adulthood. Interpretation takes into account laboratory units and overall risk; we do not arbitrarily convert mg/dL to nmol/L.
Diet and exercise usually do not significantly change Lp(a) itself, but remain important for overall risk. LDL, blood pressure and blood glucose regulation and smoking avoidance play a central role.
LDL goal and need for treatment or family screening are individualized. There is no one common LDL goal for everyone.
The information is general and is not a substitute for medical evaluation. Do not change your treatment without instructions. For urgent symptoms call 112 or 166.
