Peripheral Arterial Disease
Atherosclerosis does not only affect the arteries of the heart.
What is it
Peripheral artery disease is usually caused by atherosclerosis of the arteries that carry blood to the extremities, especially the legs.
Its presence is also an indication of increased overall cardiovascular risk.
What symptoms can it cause?
A characteristic symptom may be pain or discomfort in the legs when walking that subsides with rest.
However, there are also patients without characteristic symptoms.
What factors increase the risk?
Of particular importance are:
- smoking
- diabetes
- high LDL
- hypertension
- age
- known atherosclerotic disease in another vascular area.
