Myocarditis
Inflammation of the heart muscle.
What is it
Myocarditis refers to inflammation of the myocardium and can have different causes and very different severity.
In several cases it appears in a temporal relationship with an infection, without this meaning that every symptom after a virus is myocarditis.
How it can appear
There may be:
- chest pain
- shortness of breath
- unusual fatigue
- reduced endurance
- palpitations or arrhythmias;
How is the evaluation done?
The investigation may, depending on the clinical picture, include:
- ECG
- laboratory tests
- Echocardiogram
- Holter when there is a relevant question
- cardiac MRI in selected cases.
Why exercise matters
After confirmed myocarditis the return to vigorous exercise should not be done arbitrarily.
The time and the necessary re-examination are determined according to the course and findings of the specific patient.
When is an immediate assessment needed?
Severe or persistent chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or significant arrhythmia require immediate medical evaluation.
